RFID for Asset Management

July 4, 2019

RFID tags are a type of tracking system that use smart barcodes in order to identify items. RFID is short for "radio frequency identification", RFID tags utilize radio frequency technology. These radio waves transmit data from the tag to a reader. RFID tag may also be called RFID chip.

Advantages of RFID

- RFID technology automates data collection and vastly reduces human effort and error;
- RFID supports tag reading with no line-of-sight or item-by-item scans required;
- RFID readers can read multiple RFID tags simultaneously, offering increases in efficiency;
- All RFID tags within range can be detected instantly and matched with information in your database;
- RFID can be integrated with active scanning and fixed readers for a totally automated tracking solution.

RFID vs. Barcode Tagging

The primary disadvantage of barcode tagging is that the tags can get dirty and become hard to read. The RFID tag combats this disadvantage because the reader needs to be only within a few feet of the tag; it doesn't require direct line of sight for reading. It also cuts down the time required to complete a physical inventory because of how it works.

What is an Asset?

An asset is any piece of equipment or property that has value to a person or company. The significance of the asset can be of monetary or of intrinsic value.

With an RFID asset tracking system, you don't need to “touch" each item individually. In a well-designed scenario along with the proper implementation RFID has the potential to provide instant accountability with the pull of a trigger.

What type of equipment is required for an asset tracking system?

RFID reader; RFID antenna; RFID tags; Software.

RFID reader is an essential equipment for asset management. Different types of RFID readers are available to operate in specific environments or applications.

Handheld RFID reader is ideal for performing maintenance operations, locating assets, checking items in/out, and writing tags.

Fixed RFID reader is ideal for portal, conveyor, or general area reading and can be used with a variety of antennas to create a vast number of read zone coverage options to suit the application and/or environment.
